9.6 Globalised housing. Actually in the Czech Republic.

I shall finish this short chapter with an anecdote that originates from a visit to the far north-west of Scotland. The landscape is brown hills rolling into the distance, with occasional lochs and black mountains emerging, such as Suilven or Canisp. Here I saw a grey bungalow with a perfectly green lawn (the only green in the view), a white wheelbarrow with daffodils, net curtains: the most typical suburban bungalow except that it was surrounded by a high chainlink fence to keep out red deer. I was just about to take a photograph, thinking how out of keeping was the house with the landscape, when the occupant emerged and asked what I found so fascinating. I managed to stammer a response that I found the house ‘interesting’ and he pointed out that he had been born in the area and had lived there all his life: ‘No doubt you would like to find me in an old kilt, mending my bagpipes, but actually I am eating a pizza while watching an Australian soap-opera, and I live in a bungalow. I am part of the world also.’ He had a point!
